Showtime at the Apollo: Sometimes I’m that dude

January 23, 2011

I imagine myself on the stage: i’ve touched the golden tree stump, the lights are shinning down on my fly as outfit, and my half smile/smirk says “yup, you fool is gonna love this shit.” The ladies in the front row are up and singing along, the men in their twenties and thirties are skeptical at first, but slowly start to move their head up, down, a little side to side, then start waving their hands in the air….Its amateur night alright, but we all know im going to pro: “puro pro style” like the cousins from Goleta say.

Sometimes graduate school feels a little like that….Most of the time though i’m that goofy as white boy doing some stupid ass shit. The audience is getting down, but it’s real hard to tell if they laughing with or at..They might be clapping loud, but we all know he ain’t getting the cash prize, no record deal, he will never be the king of anything: pop, r y b, etc…Dating Divas is not in his future..If he’s lucky some friends will post a youtube video of him on their wall and follow his twitter account.

Lately, i’ve been feeling somewhere in between.

That is some funny stuff and mostly funny because it’s true! I feel the same way in grad school; I’m like Cantinflas, playing the role of pelado grad student, eating an onion like an apple. In the paraphrased words of an academic (David Bartholomae), I am only approximating the language of the academy so I can get/fit in. Keep up the good work. – Andy
